On Lunar New Year’s Eve 11 people were killed and nine were wounded during a mass shooting at a beloved dance studio in Monterey Park, California where people gathered to celebrate the holiday. The Star Ballroom Dance Studio was a gathering space for seniors, some isolated, in a city where the majority are Asian. The shooting by a suspected fellow dancer, a lone gunman who later killed himself, was just a few store fronts from a two-day Lunar New Year festival that draws thousands and instead of celebrating the community gathered to mourn the victims, including retired co-owner Ming Wei Ma. Dancers at the vigil said many more would have been there that night but they were celebrating the Lunar New Year with family. The shooting in Monterey Park was the 33rd mass shooting in the United States in 2023, and the deadliest. The year would end with 658 mass shootings across country.
